MANHATTAN (PIX11/AP) — A woman was struck and killed by a sanitation truck in Manhattan Wednesday, authorities said.

The deadly accident happened near Seventh Avenue and 15th Street, officials said.

According to police, 58-year-old Jackie Haeflinger was walking her dog when it broke free from her grasp at about 10 a.m.

The pet ran into the street as a New York City Sanitation truck was backing up and she was hit while trying to catch the dog.

Haeflinger was pronounced dead at the scene in the city’s Chelsea neighborhood. Police did not immediately know the dog’s condition.

The driver stayed at the scene; a police investigation is ongoing.
