CHARLOTTE, N.C. (PIX11) – What started as a domestic dispute spiraled into a dangerous session of car surfing, authorities in North Carolina said.

Witnesses driving along Interstate 77 in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday captured bizarre footage of a man hanging on the trunk of a sedan, speeding down the highway at up to 50 mph.

Brenda Cruz and her teenage son were driving alongside the white sedan – with two children inside – when they noticed the dangerous display.

“All of a sudden the kids say, ‘There’s someone on top of the car on the trunk,’ and I’m like what?” Cruz told PIX11 sister station FOX8. “I said, ‘Let me get my phone and started recording.’”

Cruz said other drivers slowed down, too, watching anxiously to see what would happen to the man clinging to the back of the fast-moving car.

Police told WSOC it began as a domestic dispute. The car surfer allegedly grabbed the female driver by the arm and pulled her to the ground outside a shopping center near South Boulevard and Woodlawn.

Witnesses said the driver ran into a shoe store for help. Both parties left the store, with the woman driving away and the man walking away.

About 20 minutes later, incredulous 911 dispatchers began receiving reports of a man riding on the back of a car. He appeared to have smashed through the back window.

The driver eventually pulled off the interstate, parked and ran into a gas station with her two young passengers, WSOC reports. The car-surfer hopped into the front seat and drove away.

The investigation is ongoing, though the woman has declined to press charges with the man who she says she’s in a relationship with.

Police said the sedan’s license plates did not match its registration.
