BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) — Suffolk County police say an officer has killed an armed man who displayed a handgun while fleeing from a traffic stop.

The shooting happened shortly after midnight Friday in Bay Shore, on Long Island.

Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer says three people were in a car stopped by police.

A man identified as 27-year-old Andres Morales of Bay Shore was in the front passenger seat and fled.

Officers chased Morales about 150 yards from the scene when he displayed a handgun.

An unidentified officer shot Morales twice in the torso.

Beyrer says investigators determined Morales did not fire his revolver. He says the suspect did not have a handgun permit.

The other two occupants were interviewed and are not suspected of any crime. The driver was issued several traffic summonses.
