Pickpocket who preys on shoppers linked to 13 thefts

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — Shoppers in the Bronx are being warned about a busy pickpocket who’s been linked to more than a dozen thefts, including that of a 70-year-old woman’s paycheck, police said.

The suspected thief preys on distracted customers, swiping bags, wallets and purses while the victims are perusing the aisles or checking out with a cashier, according to the NYPD.

Seven times the woman has targeted shoppers at a Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse, police said.

Police are searching for a middle-aged black female, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 135 pounds. She was caught on surveillance cameras and last seen wearing a turquoise shirt and a beige hat.

The months-long spree began in January and the thief most recently struck on June 9, police said.

The same pickpocket has been linked to these 13 thefts:

  • Jan. 16: A 33-year-old’s wallet with $220 cash and credit cards were stolen from her bag inside the Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse.
  • Jan. 21: A 43-year-old woman’s wallet containing $5 in cash and a credit card as she was shopping at Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse.
  • Feb. 1: A 28-year-old woman’s wallet with $40 in cash and credit cards was stolen as she shopped at Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse.
  • March 19: A 22-year-old woman’s wallet with $200 in cash and credit cards inside was stolen from her her cart as she was shopping at Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse.
  • April 5: A 38-year-old woman’s bag with a credit card inside was stolen as she shopped at Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse.
  • April 17: A 63-year-old man’s bag with his laptop, two cellphones and chargers was stolen while he was inside a T-Mobile store located at 1 East Fordham Road.
  • April 18: A 30-year-old man’s wallet — with credit cards inside — was taken after he left it on a counter at Marshalls at 2501 Grand Concourse.
  • April 26: A 50-year-old woman’s bag which a credit card and jewelry inside was stolen while she was shopping at Burlington Factory, located at 2543 Webster Ave.
  • May 3: A 70-year-old woman’s paycheck worth $1,044 was swiped after she put her property down on the checkout counter inside a grocery store at 2467 Jerome Ave.
  • May 4: A 27 year-old female victim’s wallet which contained cash and a credit card was stolen as she was shopping at the Childrens Place, located at 2501 Grand Concourse within the confines of the 52 Precinct.
  • May 20: A 60-year-old woman’s wallet containing cash and credit cards was stolen as she shopped at Burlington Factory, located at 2543 Webster Ave.
  • May 24: A 37-year-old woman’s purse containing credit cards was swiped as she shopped at 226 East Fordham Road.
  • June 9: A 35-year-old woman’s wallet which contained cash and a credit card was taken as she was shopping at Marshalls, located at 2501 Grand Concourse.
