NEW YORK (PIX11) — Children and adults can escape the summer heat by dipping inside the city’s pools starting Friday.

NYC’s outdoor pools open at 11 a.m. Friday and will stay open until Sept. 1.  Indoor pools stay open year-round.

But before swimmers jump in, the New York City Parks Department wants them to know what they should pack in their pool bag and what they should leave at home.

What to bring:

  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Bathing suit
  • White t-shirt (color t-shirts will not be allowed in the pools)
  • Combination lock

What not to bring:

  • Food
  • Electronics
  • Newspapers
