BAY SHORE, Long Island (PIX11)– A traffic stop turned deadly Friday morning when a Suffolk County police officer opened fire on a man who allegedly pulled out a gun while running from police, according to authorities.
Two officers pulled over a car carrying three people for “vehicle and traffic violations,” according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
It happened shortly after midnight near 155 Third Ave. in Bay Shore, Lt. Kevin Beyrer, of the Suffolk County Police Department, said.
A male passenger — identified as Andres Morales, 27, of Bay Shore — bolted from the front seat, prompting a brief foot chase, Beyrer said.
When the officer caught up with Morales, the pair started fighting and the suspect allegedly took out a handgun. That’s when the officer opened fire, striking Morales twice in the torso, police said.
The other two individuals in the vehicle were taken into custody.
The officer was uninjured in the incident.
