WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn (PIX11) – Divers are combing the East River in Williamsburg Thursday for a 21-year-old man who was swept away by the current after going for a swim to celebrate a friend’s graduation.

Steven Middleton, 21, and a group of friends jumped into the water near North 1st Street at about 5:30 a.m.

Authorities say Middleton was overcome by the strong current and carried out to sea away from his friends.

The operation has since been changed to a recovery, not a rescue.
