NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City is notorious for its tiny apartments, which could make the most experienced decorator sweat the logistics of how to fit their lives into the small space.

Design Recipes’ Cathy Hobbs shared these decorating hacks to living big in small spaces:

 1. Pre-plan: Planning ahead is key to making sure your design is strong. Peruse photos of apartment set ups, visit friends’ homes whose style you like, and take lots of notes, picking and choosing the elements you’d like to incorporate into your own space.

2. Consider function first: The key to saving space is to make every space useful and functional. For example, bedside nesting tables can act as a lamp stand during the day, and at night, the inner table can be pulled out to hold a cellphone, glass of water and a book.

3. Hire a professional: Whether your goal is to maximize space in a kitchen, bathroom or closet, hiring a professional decorator can go a long way to making the most of your space.
