3 killed in multi-vehicle crash on Route 287 in Mahwah

MAHWAH, N.J. (PIX11) — A tractor-trailer struck and killed three men who were standing near their disabled concrete truck on Route 287 northbound in Mahwah.

New Jersey State Police report that the accident happened around 12:38 p.m. near Exit 66.

A tractor-trailer carrying a load of bricks struck the side of the cement truck that was being worked on in the right shoulder of the road.

Two repair workers and the driver were struck and killed while working outside the truck.

A Toyota Avalon was also hit by the tractor-trailer. Both vehicles caught on fire.

The husband and wife in the Toyota as well as the tractor-trailer driver were able to escape their vehicles. They each received minor injuries.

Police say the investigation is still in the early stages and the names of the deceased have not been released.

The investigation is expected to take several weeks to complete.

The northbound lanes north of Exit 59 will be shut for several hours as police investigate and remove debris.
