NEW YORK (PIX11) — Rep. Charlie Rangel will again seek re-election Tuesday in a storied career that has spanned four decades.
In advance of the primaries, PIX11 is showcasing historic footage of the veteran congressman shot on June 24, 1970, as Rangel spoke to the press after winning his first election and unseating Rep. Adam Clayton Powell.
It was the first of 23 elections that would see Rangel victorious.
Despite his censure in 2010 following an ethics investigation over taxes on a property in the Dominican Republic, early polls have Rangel in the lead over State Senator Adriano D. Espaillat.
The 84-year-old Democrat is the third-longest serving member of the House of Representatives after taking office in 1971.
