NEW YORK (PIX11) — In a move that shocked many hip hop fans, NYC radio legend Angie Martinez announced she was leaving Hot 97 — and is now headed to competitor Power 105.

“Clear Channel Media and Entertainment announced today that one of the most influential voices in Hip-Hop radio, Angie Martinez, will join the company to host afternoons on Power 105.1 in New York and Midday’s on 103.5 The Beat in Miami,” a statement released Wednesday read.

Known as “The Voice of New York,” Martinez had spent over 20 years with Hot 97, interviewing the biggest names in hip hop and even President Barack Obama.

“Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey,” Martinez wrote on her Instagram account.

The move to Hot 97’s number one rival led to a strong reaction on social media.

But, fans needn’t be too worried, as Martinez will only be a few stations away on the dial.

Martinez will be starting with her new station in mid-July, from 2-6 p.m.

“I’m excited to join Power 105.1 in New York and The Beat in Miami and expand my brand even further in the coming months,” she said in a statement.
