PURCHASE, New York (PIX11/AP) – One person died when a small plane crashed just outside the SUNY Purchase campus Friday morning.

A family spokesman says the pilot of a small plane who died in a crash outside New York City was Richard Rockfeller, great grandson of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller.

The plane, a single-engine Piper Meridian, went down near 120 Cottage Ave. just before 8:30 a.m. after taking off from the Westchester County Airport.

Richard Rockefeller of Falmouth, Maine, was the only person on board at the time of the crash.

According to airport operations manager John Starace, the aircraft crashed after running into trees west of the runway.
