MALTA, N.Y. (AP/PIX11) — A retired Nassau County police officer is accused of killing his wife then living with her body lying lifeless in their bedroom for days, authorities said.

Charles Wilkinson, 69, was arrested after deputies visited his upstate New York home to check on his wife, who had not been heard from for several days, according to the District Attorney of Saratoga County.

Kathleen Wilkinson, 65, was strangled to death last week during a domestic dispute at the couple’s home in Malta, about 20 miles north of Albany, a forensic pathologist said Monday.

Deputies responded to the Wilkinsons’ home Sunday for a welfare check. The suspect and deputies spoke at the door for several minutes before Wilkinson let them inside.

Once inside, deputies found Kathleen Wilkinson’s body on the floor of a first-floor bedroom, the DA said.

Wilkinson has been charged with second-degree murder and remanded into custody without bail, the DA said.
