NEW YORK (PIX11) — Warm weather this may have triggered a violent crime spree in the city.

In a matter of hours, at least people eight people were shot in six separate incidents.

First, a 20-year-old man was killed outside an apartment building on 49th Street in Sunset Park.

Then, police say a retired NYPD officer shot and killed a suspect who tried to take his car in East New York.

Memorial Day was marred by several shootings and stabbings.

Shots also rang out after a barbecue in Canarsie. Three people were injured but are expected to be okay.

Another man was shot in Harlem. Some say it will get worse as the temperatures rise.

There were several stabbings over night as well.

Critics say this is happening because Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is taking a softer approach on crime rather than a more aggressive one.

Bratton said, “I am not concerned, crime is down overall but it will spike from time to time. It cannot stay down all the time everywhere.”
