Chinatown street renamed after Danny Chen, soldier who committed suicide after hazing

CHINATOWN (PIX11) — A portion of Elizabeth Street between Canal and Bayard Streets was renamed as “Private Danny Chen Way.” after the soldier from Chinatown who was bullied into suicide.

The renaming ceremony was to take place Saturday with city leaders, friends and family in attendance.

Danny Chen was brutally hazed in Afghanistan for being Chinese-American.

Investigators found that on the day of his death, Chen was forced to wear his equipment while crawling 100 meters on gravel as rocks were thrown at him, a spokeswoman for his parents said.
