JOLIET, Ill. (PIX11) – Overhearing a conversation about Miley Cyrus may seem innocuous enough, but in one Illinois town, discussion of the pop singer marked the beginning of a brutal beating.

They allegedly spoke of Miley Cyrus then hurled racial slurs at the victims before attacking.

Donnie Rice was at Lety’s on Hickory Street dropping off food for his daughter, who works at the bar, when he became entangled in the brawl.

He said the attackers taunted a bar patron for drinking “Mexican beer” and “told him to go over and sit over at the other end of the bar with all of the other Mexicans.”

Rice said as many as five men said “something about Miley Cyrus” before launching their attack against the patron his girlfriend. That’s when Rice stepped in.

“I was just trying to protect one of the guys and the girl getting beat up and then they just switched from beating that guy and the girl up to me,” Rice told Joliet Patch.

He suffered two black eyes. It’s not clear the extent of the couple’s injuries.

Daniel Lahey, 26; Robert Krapil, 27; and Ryan Elliot, 27, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery in the attack, Patch reports.
