MIDDLEBURG, Fl. (WOKV/PIX11)– A Florida teen fresh off a breakup with her boyfriend staged a silly hoax that set off a massive police search to gain sympathy.

Ankita Lavender,16, of Middleburg was found by police lying on the side of a road four hours after she told her father she was thrown into a truck by two men, according to WOKV. Officials said Lavender continued her “ruse” until police determined the girl’s story was false after overnight questioning.

According to officials, she reported to her ex-boyfriend that she was being followed and then told her father about the psuedo-abduction.

“It cheapens or lessens the incident when it happens to a real victim,” Clay County Sheriff’s Office Colonel Craig Aldrich said.

About  40 investigators responded within the first two hours of the initial report, along with air resources from JSO and Fire and Rescue personnel, according to Alrich.  Authorities even issued a Florida Amber Alert to help find the teen.

He said the four hour search may have cost between $5,000-$7,000.

Investigators could file a misdemeanor charge against Lavender, but her juvenile status prevents her charges from being released publicly.
