NEW YORK (AP) — Police in suburban New York say an off-duty NYPD officer has been arrested on an assault charge after shooting a man six times at a stoplight.

Pelham Police Department Chief Joseph Benefico didn’t disclose Wednesday why Officer Brendan Cronin might’ve fired his weapon at least 13 times, injuring the 47-year-old man.

Commissioner Bratton called allegations of cops drinking on the job “troubling.”

Benefico says the man was shot in the torso, arm and hands while sitting in a car at a stoplight Tuesday night. He’s hospitalized in stable condition.

Police say Cronin was pulled over while driving with his hazard lights on. He says the 27-year-old Yonkers resident refused to take a Breathalyzer test.
