MILFORD, Conn. (PIX11) — Instead of attending a high school prom, Connecticut students mourned the death of 16-year-old Maren Sanchez.

“Remembering all the good times we had with her, and her energy,” said Isabel Cortez.

According to police, Sanchez was assaulted at 7:14 a.m. on Friday in a hallway adjacent to a stairwell inside the Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut.

Investigators say the 16-year-old male who allegedly assaulted her is also a student who, according to reports, may have been upset with Sanchez for turning down a prom invitation.

Police will not confirm that. The suspect was taken into custody at the school.

Like many, Angel Fernandez didn’t go to the school, but told PIX11 he had to come there, and pay his respects for Sanchez, and for those he knows at the school.
“I hope that my prayers go out to the families,” said Fernandez

Sanchez’s cousin spoke on Friday.

“Maren should be celebrating at her prom this evening with her friends and classmates, instead we are morning her death,” said Edward Kovac.

Authorities said Sanchez was found with lacerations to her neck, chest and her facial area.

According to police, a school staff member who witnessed part of the assault, and other staff members were able to remove the student suspect from the scene.

Staff members and emergency responders tried to save the teen.

Counseling is being provided for students.

The 16-year-old suspect has not been identified. He is in police custody, and has been charged as a juvenile offender with murder.

Police said he will be arraigned in juvenile court on Monday.
