SAN FRANCISCO (PIX11) — “Why are you taking pictures with minorities, why?”
TMZ says those are the comments of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Sterling allegedly made the comment after learning his girlfriend had taken a picture with NBA great Magic Johnson and posted it to Instagram.
“Don’t put him on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me,” said the person heard on the recording. “And don’t bring him to my games, OK?”
The picture has since been taken down but the firestorm has already started to spread.
Johnson responded on Twitter saying he would no longer attend Clippers games as long as Sterling owns the team.
He also tweeted: “LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s comments about African Americans are a black eye for the NBA.”
“We are in the process of conducting a full investigation into the audio recording obtained by TMZ,” said NBA Spokesperson Mike Bass. “The remarks heard on the recording are disturbing and offensive, but at this time we have no further information.”
But this isn’t the first time racist claims have been brought against the Clippers owner.
Twice Sterling has been forced to pay for alleged discrimination against minorities in real estate dealings, and former players and employees have claimed Sterling maintains a racist work environment.
The comments have led everyone from Civil Rights Leaders to former NBA players to call for Sterling to give up ownership if the team, or at the very least be suspended.
The comments come as the Clippers are up 2 games to 1 in their best of 7 series against the Golden State Warriors. What impact the recording will have on the team and the fans remains to be seen.
The Clippers have their next playoff game tomorrow afternoon and their next home game on Tuesday.
