NEW YORK (PIX11/AP) — Police say a woman has been shot dead in an apparent domestic argument at a New York City home while two children were there.

Suspect Queens mom shot

NYPD officers take away the suspected shooter after a Queens woman was gunned down before her two children.

The gunfire erupted around 11 a.m. Saturday at a house on 104th Street in the Ozone Park section of Queens. Police say the woman, 40-year-old Jessica Canty, was shot twice in the chest and died soon afterward at a hospital.

The two kids, 4 and 8, were heard by neighbor Lisa Santiago screaming, “My dad just shot my mom and there’s blood everywhere, help, help.”

The two children were hiding in a deli near the home when police and EMS arrived.

Her husband, 43-year-old Kevin Canty, was arrested in the area, and police have found a gun they believe was used. Canty is a former NYPD officer who struggled with anger issues and depression, according to people who know him.

The shooting victim was pronounced dead after sustaining two gunshots to the chest.

On the NYPD Facebook page he was honored as a hero for saving a man’s life in Union Square, but neighbors say things deteriorated for Canty afterwards.

Police are still questioning Canty, no charges have been filed as of Saturday evening.
