1 dead, 1 injured in stabbing at NJ shopping center

CLIFTON, New Jersey (PIX11) – One person is dead and another injured in a stabbing at a shopping center in Clifton, according to police.

The fatal attack happened just after 7 a.m. at the Richfield Shopping Center at 1359 Clifton Avenue.

Two men were walking together when they were approached by a homeless man with a knife, according to the Clifton Police Department.  The homeless man, identified as 61-year-old Henry Werner, stabbed one of the victims, a 67-year-old man.

When the other victim, 81, tried to intervene, Werner stabbed him as well.

An off-duty Nutley police officer saw the attack and intervened — disarming Werner and restraining him.

Shopping Center

The stabbing was apparently unprovoked, according to Clifton police.

Both victims were rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital where the 67-year-old died.  The second victim is in serious condition.

Werner was arrested at the scene and faces murder, aggravated assault, attempted murder, weapons and other charges.
