NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors have indicted a 16-year-old boy on a second-degree murder charge in the fire-related death of a veteran NYPD officer.
Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson says Friday 16-year-old Marcell Dockery faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison if convicted. He’s already been arraigned on assault, arson and reckless endangerment charges.
His attorney Jesse Young did not immediately return a message. Dockery’s being held without bail.
Authorities say Dockery lit a mattress on fire on the 13th floor of a Coney Island apartment building last weekend. Police say Dockery set the fire out of boredom.
They say officer Dennis Guerra and his partner were overcome by carbon monoxide and smoke while responding.
Guerra died Wednesday. His partner remains in critical but stable condition.
Guerra’s funeral is scheduled for Monday.
