EDGEWATER PARK, The Bronx (PIX11) — The cousin of a New York City councilman has been arrested on drug charges, police said Friday.
Michael Vacca, 24, was arrested after officers served a search warrant Thursday afternoon at a home in the Edgewater Park neighborhood of the Bronx, authorities said.
Vacca, the cousin of Councilman James Vacca, is accused of criminal possession of marijuana in the second degree among other charges, police said.
In order to be charged with that level of felony, a suspect must be accused of possessing more than 16 ounces of marijuana and related-paraphernalia, according to the New York State Unified court System.
It was not immediately known how much of the illicit substance Vacca is accused of having.
Councilman Vacca, 59, was elected in 2006 to represent District 13 in the Bronx, which includes his native Pelham Bay, City Island, Throggs Neck and Morris Park. His current term expires in December 2017.
When asked about the incident, Vacca’s office said the suspect is a distant cousin of the councilman’s with whom he has no relationship.

NOTE: The original version of this story reported that a councilman’s brother was arrested. Rather, the suspect is a cousin of the Bronx lawmaker.AlertMe
