NEW YORK (PIX11) –– A 22-year-old woman died after she was struck by two taxis while crossing a Manhattan street, police said.

Kelly Gordon, of New Jersey, was crossing York Avenue at East 84th Street when she was struck by a yellow taxi traveling south on York, NYPD said. She was then hit by another yellow taxi, this one traveling north on the same road.

The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Responding officers found Gordon unconscious and unresponsive. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Both taxi drivers stayed at the scene and an investigation continued into the morning Friday.

The tragedy comes a day after lawmakers introduced a bill in the New York City Council that would require data recorders, also know as black boxes, be installed in all yellow cabs. Proponents of the bill say the devices could monitor drivers’ speed and aid in investigations, like this one now underway in Manhattan.
