Getting around in New York City has many ups and downs.

When it comes to escalators and elevators, they are the machines that offer a lift.

Some of them are better than others.

The escalators along 42nd Street are among the worst in the system.

At Grand Central Station, one was broken for almost the entire month of February. One on the other side was broken for a month at the end of 2013.

The MTA has more than 300 escalators and elevators.

Speaking of the big picture, an elevator on the 7 train extension is already being blamed for delaying the projected opening until the Fall.
