VERMONT (PIX11) — The last surviving member of the real von Trapp family has died.

Maria von Trapp, whose family’s story was told in The Sound of Music passed away in her sleep at her home in Vermont.

Von Trapp’s family fled their home in Austria to escape the Nazis in 1938 before performing together around the U.S.

She was the second-eldest daughter of seven brothers and sisters.

Their story inspired the 1965 musical hit The Sound of Music which remains one of the most successful and recognized films of all time.
