ROCKVILLE CENTER (PIX11) – A Long Island woman was just trying to park when a huge sinkhole opened before her, nearly swallowing her car whole around 1 p.m. Friday.

Gail Sorrentino, 65, had pulled into her driveway when all of a sudden her white, four-door Subaru plunged through the pavement.

Gail Sorrentino, 65, says she was just trying to park in the same part of her driveway she always does when the earth gave way.

“I just went to park my car in the spot where I always park it, on the apron of the driveway, and the ground fell out from under me,” Sorrentino said. “I guess cause I’m short and small I ended up standing up, I didn’t hit anything.”

Woman into sinkhole

Sorrentino says she avoided injury as the car pitched forward, landing in a standing position.

The vehicle plunged headlong into the 10-to-15 foot hole, with only the rear wheels and trunk peeking above the ground.  Sorrentino managed to call 911, and rescuers were able to pull her unharmed out of the crater.
