EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — Cops say a serial sex offender tried to rape a 19-year-old woman in East Harlem Tuesday morning.

Police arrested Demetrius Edwards, 34,  and charged him with attempted rape.

Police responded to a call for a possible sexual assault  around 4:30 a.m.  The victim told police that after she got out of a cab on Madison Avenue, a man grabbed her from behind and threw her to the ground between two parked cars.

The suspect then repeatedly slammed her head into the ice and snow.

A witness heard the woman screaming and called police with a detailed description of the suspect.

The suspect fled but was stopped by police minutes later and taken into custody.

Police said Edwards was busted for rape in 2001 and 1999, and  sexual abuse in 1998.
