KINGSBRIDGE, Bronx (PIX11) – Mother nature is being blamed for part of a roof to collapse onto the second floor of a house in the Bronx.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the incident which happened just after 9 a.m. Wednesday on University Avenue in the Kingsbridge section.

“A heavy snow load on a heavy roof caused the failure of the roof structure,” said Chief Tom Reilly of the FDNY.

The homeowner was at work at the time.  His elderly mother, who neighbors say has been hospitalized in recent months,  was not home either.

The Department of Buildings has issued a vacate order for the 2 ½ story house, and for the side yard of neighboring property.  The owner has been hit with a violation for failing to maintain the more than 100-year-old

building and must have it inspected by a licensed engineer.

“I’ve been telling him all the time ‘you got to fix the house,’ but he never does and now he’s got problems,” said neighbor Julio Pabon.

The Buildings Department says the part of the roof that caved in must be demolished and replaced.  The agency has deemed the rest of the house stable.
