Large 5-alarm Elizabeth fire sweeps through stores

ELIZABETH, N.J. (PIX11/AP) — Firefighters say they’re containing a 5-alarm fire that has swept through a row of stores in Elizabeth.

Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution Thursday.

According to Fire Chief Tom McNamara, the fire started in a cockloft and and the flames spread through eight stores that were closed at the time.

McNamara also says the roof collapsed.

Firefighters are hitting hot spots.

There are no reports of any injuries.

There’s no word on the cause.
