NEWARK (PIX11) – Severe turbulence injured five people and forced a United Airlines plane to return to Newark Liberty Airport Thursday afternoon.
Three of the passengers are now at University Hospital in Newark and two at Trinitas in Elizabeth, according to Port Authority officials. All five injured were crew members.
United Airlines flight 89 was headed to Beijing when the plane hit turbulence around 3 p.m.
The captain landed safely at Newark Liberty, offloading passengers at Gate 108.
All 189 passengers were unhurt and were provided lodgings near the airport, according to a United spokeswoman, and will be put on a flight Friday morning.
