NEW YORK (PIX11) — The MetroCard will soon be a thing of the past.

The MTA plans to replace the MetroCard with a new form of “fare payment technology” in 2019.

The idea is to install an EZ Pass-like system in the subways.

Instead of swiping a magnetic MetroCard strip, you would tap a credit card, smartphone or keychain and go straight through.

The MTA says the new technology will not only speed things up for customers, it will also save the authority millions of dollars.
