NEW YORK (PIX11) – The mayor of New York City may have received high marks for his handling of the recent snowstorm, but de Blasio caused quite a stir Friday – by eating his pizza with a fork.

De Blasio was in Staten Island at “Goodfellas Pizza” for a pie when the upsetting moment occurred.

Mayor de Blasio dines on pizza using a fork and knife at “Goodfellas” in Staten Island.

The mayor set Twitter aflame when he went for his knife and fork, later declaring that it was just how they do it in Italy, where his family is from.

De Blasio took down three slices, at least partially eating one of them like a true New Yorker.

“In my ancestral homeland, it is more typical to eat with a fork and knife,” the mayor said. “I’ve been to Italy a lot and I picked up the habit for certain types of pizza.”

To the mayor’s credit, he did grip one of his slices like a true New Yorker for several bites, but then went back to the cleaner cutlery approach to finish.

Mayor de Blasio, likely regretting his decision to use his hands on an overflowing cannoli.

What he severely lacked in style points, he started to make up in quantity, however, taking down three loaded slices and a massive cannoli.

Sadly, it seems that the mayor has learned nothing from Daily Show host Jon Stewart’s skewering of The Donald when he brought Sarah Palin to experience ‘real New York City pizza.’
