TIMES SQUARE (PIX11) – A tight mix of tourists and New Yorkers flocked to Times Square early, eagerly awaiting the ball drop that signaled the New Year.

The celebration was officiated by Bronx native and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who led the crowd at 11:59 p.m. in counting down the 60 seconds to the descent of the iconic crystal ball.

Crowds arrived early Tuesday, and endured light snow flurries as temperatures dipped below freezing during the day.
