newarkNEWARK, N.J. (AP) — One man was killed and a woman was wounded when shots rang out on a Newark street, the latest in a spate of violent incidents that have plagued New Jersey’s largest city in recent weeks.

The Star-Ledger  reports the shooting occurred early Tuesday night in the city’s Central Ward, near Sussex Avenue and Hudson Street. A motive for the shooting wasn’t clear, but authorities told the newspaper that one person had been arrested.

Authorities said 45-year-old Juan Carlos Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her stomach. Her name was not released.

Diaz was the 111th person killed in Newark in 2013, the most since 1990 and a 40 percent increase since 2006.
