1 man dead after car plunges into Hudson River in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (PIX11)– One man is confirmed dead after his car plunged into the Hudson River in Jersey City.

The accident happened around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Police say the car drove through a barricade before going into the freezing water.

Rescue divers pulled out the body of a man, possibly in his 20’s, around 5:15 a.m.

The NYPD has been on the scene all morning along with divers from the Port Authority of New Jersey.

The director of public safety of New Jersey James Shea says he believes only one person was in the car at the time of the crash but the search for other passengers will continue throughout the morning.

At this time the crash is being investigated as an accident.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers will be on site later in the day to pull the car out of the water.
