NYPD searches for man who escaped while in police custody

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The New York City Police Department is asking for assistance in locating a man who fled while in police custody.

At around 10 p.m. Friday night, police pulled over a speeding Honda Accord on the westbound side of the Cross Bronx Expressway. When police searched the car, they found the suspect and his passenger in possession of narcotics and marijuana.

While in custody, the suspect 23-year-old William Monge-Betancourt struggled free from an officer and fled from the scene. The officer’s hand was injured during the struggle.

The other suspect was arrested without further incident.

Monge-Betancourt is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 foot 8 and weighing 175 pounds.
