Cops believe the man was trying to find warm clothes or shelter for the night.

BRIDGETON, N.J. (PIX11) – A man died after becoming trapped in a Salvation Army clothing collection box Monday night, Bridgeton police say.

Cops say they received a call about a man hanging from one of the collection boxes at about 11 p.m. Officers were able to dismantle the door and free the man, who was identified as 50-year-old Joseph Hanshaw. Emergency crews tried to revive Hanshaw and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officials are calling the death an “unfortunate and tragic accident” and believe Hanshaw was trying to look for warm clothing or spend the night in the box.
