NEW YORK (PIX11) – Hold the ketchup but add extra bugs.
Antojeria la Popular restaurant in SoHo is getting infested with hungry customers now that it’s offering a burger-style dish made with pan-fried crickets.
It’s called the “Grass-Whopper.”
The crickets are fried in a skillet and topped with white Chihuahua cheese, which helps bind the bugs together.
Management there says they’re selling up to a hundred of these a day and it’s only been on the menu for about a week.
“People come here specifically to try the burger,” the restaurant’s director of operations, Marco Shalma, told the New York Post. “We’ve definitely been busier since it was introduced.”
On why the Grass-Whopper was introduced, restaurant owner Regina Galvanduque said, “Everybody has a veggie burger and a turkey burger. Why not a grasshopper burger?”
