Lionel: justice for Tommy

The Nonhuman Rights Project is bringing a unique lawsuit on behalf of a chimp named Tommy with similar lawsuits promised. It seeks to have chimpanzees possessing legal personhood status.

The idea is that since slaves were allowed habeas corpus remedies notwithstanding the fact that they had no legal status, animals should be able to use that remedy as well. This is beyond novel to say the least.

If animals are “persons” afforded protection what does this say about circuses, hunting, theme parks even slaughter methods under religious doctrines and practices?
