NEW YORK (PIX11) – Gary dos Santos, the man dubbed the Mayor of Strawberry Fields in Central Park, has passed away from complications from leukemia, according to the New York Times.

Dos Santos was a devoted fan of John Lennon and was known for decorating the “Imagine” mosaic at the West 72nd entrance of the park with flowers. “Brother” — as dos Santos would refer to Lennon as — lived across the street in the Dakota apartment building.

Although sick in the hospital, the Mayor told the Times he would visit the mosaic on the anniversary of Lennon’s death on December 8.

“I’m not worried because I have the brother watching over me,” dos Santos said.
