FORT LEE, New Jersey (PIX11) – A massive backup stacked up in New Jersey Monday when a hole opened up on the upper roadway of the eastbound side of the George Washington bridge.
Emergency repairs are underway – first shutting half of the upper roadway along with one lane of the lower. Then a breakdown snarled traffic on the New Jersey-bound side. To make matters worse, a crash on the upper roadway shut Manhattan-bound traffic down completely.
The Port Authority says the emergency repairs are expected to continue into Tuesday morning and urged drivers to take alternate routes including the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
