It’s one of the hottest ways to get around New York City.

But when a bike that looks to be a Citi Bike turned up on a street in Brooklyn (spray painted and defaced), PIX11’s Greg Mocker started investigating.

A lost or stolen Citi Bike could end up costing the person who rented it $1,000. The NYC Department of Transportation did not comment on this report or the bike in question.

A tweet from CitiBikeNYC said, “Your #citibike is *yours* when you check it out. That means it’s up to you to lock it securely at the end of your trip. #citibikepsa”
