MT. VERNON, N.Y. (PIX11) – The Mt. Vernon Fire Department said a teenager managed to escape a fire that killed his parents, older brother and sister at their home in Westchester County Tuesday.

Around 3:30 a.m., firefighters tried to get to the victims through an interior stairwell in the multi-family home on South Bond Street,  but the door was bolted shut.

When firefighters broke the door down, they found one victim in the stairwell and the other three in the basement. Mount Vernon Deputy Fire Chief John Batista said,”There was fire all around, fire out the rear at every entrance, in the basement. My guys could not get the victims out.”

Three firefighters were hurt battling the fire. So far, there is no word on what caused the fire. Tuesday afternoon, fire marshals were still at the scene investigating.

The Mayor of Mount Vernon and the Fire Chief are scheduled to speak at the news conference at 2:30 p.m.
