(PIX11)– Recently there was a recall for some tainted dog treats that made lots of dogs sick and some even died.
The FDA is proposing new rules to help protect your pet and you from contaminated food.
The Preventive Controls for Animal Food rule would set new manufacturing standards for people and facilities involved in the production and handling of food for pets and farm animals.
This would also apply to the FDA’s center for veterinary medicine.
Traditionally, the FDA responds to safety problems after they happen.
This is much more of a preventive program. Part of the reason is so many outbreaks of contaminated food.
The most recent outbreak took place in 2012 when 30,000 tons of dry dog and cat food were recalled because of salmonella. The food even got 47 people sick.
The rules will also make changes to the nutritional content of animal food to ensure it meets their needs.AlertMe
