12 people pulled from burning Bronx building

Westchester Square, BRONX (PIX11)– A fire broke out Monday morning in the Westchester Square section of the Bronx.

According to authorities, 12 people were pulled from the burning building on Taylor Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene they found one man laying on the driveway who had jumped off of a balcony.

Two children were also dangled over the side of that balcony by family members who were trying to get them to safety.

The fire started in the basement of the building.

Firefighters say one smoke detector was going off and helped get residents to safety.

Five people are in critical and serious condition, one of them is an 18-year-old woman.

All of the victims were transported to Jacobi Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
