Queens firefighter killed by alleged drunk driver laid to rest

Whitestone, QUEENS (PIX11)– One of New York’s bravest was laid to rest on Thursday.

His friends called him Monte. 31-year veteran John Monteverde was killed last week when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by an alleged drunk driver in New Jersey.

Monteverde was on his way to work when the driver of a Honda Accord rolled through a stop sign and hit the bike.

The accident happened around 5:15 a.m. in Union Township. Monteverde was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 57-year-old worked out of Engine 22 in Manhattan and is survived by a partner and three adult children.

The driver was arrested and charged with DWI.
