Councilwoman Letitia James is the winner in the democratic runoff for Public Advocate.
James beat State Senator James Squadron with 59.4% of the vote.
She has no republican rival in November’s election, all but assuring she will become the first black woman to hold citywide office.
James was elected to City Council in 2003, becoming the first person to win on the Working Families Party ticket.
Only 180,000 people showed up to vote and it cost the city $13 million. That’s about $70 for every vote.
