A quick-witted mother pushing her baby in his stroller through Fort Tryon Park fought off an attacker with a bike pump Friday morning.
Mary Jane Jarman was jogging with her eight-month-old son through the Washington Heights park at about 9:30 when a man holding a broken glass bottle approached her.
The 33-year-old mother attempted to flee, but the man grabbed her from behind, tossing her to the ground and knocking over the stroller with the baby inside.
Jarmon told police she used a bike pump to fight her attacker off, bashing him over the head with it until he began to bleed. Jarmon told DNAinfo her first instinct was to protect her son, saying “I was protecting him with my life.” The man then ran off, saying “I’m really sorry, I’m sick.”
Jarmon and her son were not harmed.
Police describe the attacker as between 25- and 30-years-old and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue thermal.
Just last month, Fort Tryon Park was surveyed as the happiest place in Manhattan.
